HONOR FLIGHT

(made possible by

An Honor Flight is conducted by non-profit organizations dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war they fought in Washington, D.C. at no cost to the veterans.

Through the eyes of an honored Veteran of World War II:

"I was chosen to go to Washington DC on a Honor Flight as I am a Veteran of World War II."

"The flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor are for  the Veterans from northern Arizona.  Veterans from southern Arizona leave from  Tucson."

"All expenses are paid through donations to the Honor Flight Network.  Flight to and returning from Washington DC, bus transportation, as well as meals and hotel accommodations at the Hilton."

"Each Veteran (in a yellow shirt) was appointed a Guardian (in a blue shirt) chosen from volunteers who pay $900 for the privilege.  Guardians then accompany their Veteran at all times and assist their Veteran in every way."

"I was fortunate in having a friend of many years, who is himself a Veteran of the Vietnam War volunteer at his expense to be my Guardian."

"Benjamin Shepherd and I were inseparable throughout the trip.  Thank you Ben, your help made the trip SPECIAL for me."

"Our group was made up of World War II  and Korean War Veterans."

"The sites that we were to visit included:

                 The Naval War Museum

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

                 Arlington Memorial Cemetery

                 The Word War II Memorial

                 The Korean War Memorial"

In the August Newsletter I included this photograph from the Naval War Museum of the USS Walter B Cobb:

But I failed to include the significance and the photograph of the actual USS Walter B Cobb.

You see our honored Veteran served aboard the USS Walter B Cobb which was an Amphibious Personnel Destroyer and he is very proud of this photograph.  And rightly so.

Which brought up another topic.   We were all young once.  And drawing is fun with chalk.  But not on the neighbor's fence.  And not on the mailboxes.  The Post Office is not amused by defacing the postal boxes either by artistic expression, words, food, gravel or broken keys in the locks.  The Post Office is coming out to remove various food items and broken keys, etc.  Now we can start fresh.
